Prépositions de temps : at, on, in

PrépositionEmploiExemples
atune heure, un moment précis, certaines fêtesat 7 o'clock, at noon, at midnight, at night, at the moment, at Christmas, at the weekend (UK)
onun jour, une dateon Monday, on 14 July, on my birthday, on Christmas Day, on the weekend (US)
inune période plus longue : mois, saison, année, siècle, partie de la journéein May, in summer, in 2026, in the 1990s, in the morning, in the evening

Quelques points méritent une attention particulière :

  • in the morning / in the afternoon / in the evening, mais at night. Et si l'on précise le jour, on revient à on : on Monday morning, on the evening of 3 October.
  • Pas de préposition devant this, next, last, every : I'll see you next Monday, We met last year, She runs every day. On ne dit pas on next Monday.
  • in + durée au futur signifie « dans » : I'll be back in ten minutes = je reviens dans dix minutes.
  • « En » + durée (« je l'ai fait en deux heures ») se dit aussi in : I did it in two hours.

Prépositions de lieu : at, on, in

PrépositionEmploiExemples
atun point, un lieu vu comme un endroit où l'on fait quelque choseat the station, at the door, at home, at work, at school, at the airport, at a concert
onune surface, une ligne, un étage, les transports en communon the table, on the wall, on the second floor, on the bus, on the train, on a plane, on the left
inun espace fermé ou délimité : pièce, ville, pays, voiturein the kitchen, in a box, in London, in France, in the car, in a taxi

On the bus mais in the car : on est dans une voiture ou un taxi (petit espace où l'on ne se tient pas debout), mais sur un bus, un train, un avion ou un bateau. Pour une adresse complète, on emploie at : She lives at 10 Baker Street.

Je suis à la gare = I'm at the station ; je suis à Londres = I'm in London (jamais at London).
  • Avec mouvement : to. Je vais à Londres = I'm going to London ; je vais à la gare = I'm going to the station.
  • Exception : home s'emploie sans to après un verbe de mouvement : I'm going home (je rentre à la maison), mais I'm at home.
  • Arriver à : arrive in + ville ou pays, arrive at + bâtiment ou lieu précis. On ne dit jamais arrive to.

« En »

  • Moyen de transport : by — en voiture = by car, en train = by train, en avion = by plane. Mais à pied = on foot.
  • Mois, saison, année : in — en mai = in May, en été = in summer, en 2026 = in 2026.
  • Langue : in — en français = in French.
  • Pays : in sans mouvement (in Spain), to avec mouvement (to Spain).

« Chez », « pendant », « depuis »

  • Chez quelqu'un : at someone's (place / house) — je suis chez mes parents = I'm at my parents' ; chez le médecin = at the doctor's.
  • Pendant + durée = for (for two hours) ; pendant + événement = during (during the film).
  • Depuis = for + durée ou since + point de départ, avec le present perfect : voir le guide present perfect ou prétérit.

Verbes et adjectifs suivis d'une préposition
